2013 has seen many new design trends emerge which are favourable in the web design community. In this article we will delve into responsive design, a growing trend that we expect to see more of in 2014.

Responsive design has become a huge consideration for any new website to hit the internet. Gone are the days of a fixed target audience, sitting in an office behind a desktop computer surfing the web. We now find ourselves submerged in a portable industry - where viewing websites on the go has become the norm. We are surrounded by new technology, allowing us to browse the internet at any given opportunity - such as the daily commute to and from work. With this in mind, websites target audience have shifted dramatically and so has the motive to build a website to which will adapt to fit all these new portable devices that consumers thrive on.

What is Responsive Design?

Responsive design” is the term given to the approach to overcome all of these problems. The goal is simple – create a single set of website styles which will run perfectly on all environments and screen sizes. In order to achieve this, designers are to imagine the website as a single canvas which is fluid by nature. Using the latest website technologies such as CSS3 and Media Queries, website creators can now show, hide and adapt different elements of the website for particular portable devices, unlike before. If you have not noticed any websites already doing this, you certainly will moving forward. Many leading global brand websites such as Microsoft are now adopting this approach, which works fantastically well on all device sizes. This gives us a greater insight as to what we can expect to see moving forward with responsive websites into 2014.
